Brotherhood

My brother and I have been on the same continent just 6 times in the last 18 years. Across that span, the combined amount of time we’ve spent with each other has probably been around 3 weeks. When I found out that he was going to be in Vegas for a conference a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t hesitate in planning to fly there to visit him and spend some time with him. We had a great time, doing things that brothers just do – driving around aimlessly, attending a concert, having drinks and talking shit. We’ve always had a strong relationship and the years and thousands of miles of separation melted away instantly the moment we were reunited.

Brotherhood is a special thing. The bond of brotherhood is formed long before common memories and experiences exist. They’re forged within the spirals of shared DNA, and by the flow of common blood. The stories we create and the lessons we’re taught by our parents and elders then reinforce that which already existed, each one a winding filament that wraps around and adds strength to the core. At some point, the whole becomes unbreakable and impervious to the ravages of time. I’m fortunate that even though we’ve not had an opportunity to be around each other for half of our lives, my brother and I managed to create these bonds that can never be broken.
